Planning Principals for Financially Savvy Self Employed Women

The financial facts of a women’s life are unique.

It is especially important for women to be actively engaged in family finances because most of you – in fact, 9 out of 10 – will be in charge of your own finances at some point in your adult lives if you are not already. The unfortunate reality is that 3 out of every 5 women face retirement alone. (Investment News, “Making a New Widow’s Life Easier,” February 2008)

Given these facts, planning is more important than ever for women because longevity is increasing, thanks to medical advances and healthier living. While this is great news, it also means that your retirement nest egg has to last over a longer period of time. And that puts you at greater risk of outliving your savings.

Planning is also really important because women often have shorter careers than men. On average, they tend to take more time out of the workforce to either care for children or other family members or for some other reason which often results in heading into retirement with a smaller nest egg.

Nearly everyone will experience some financial challenge in their lifetime, in most cases that difference between overcoming those challenges and being overcome by them really depends on how prepared you are today. Remember, it’s never too late to put a plan together, and the earlier you start to plan the more options you are likely to have.
